How To Draw Like Skottie Young
Earthworks IN THE CRATES
I've been combing through my bookshelves, files, hard drives and anything else I can notice to share from over the last twenty years of my career as an cartoonist. I was happy to find a few of my long out of print sketchbooks.
Both of them (STUFF AND JUNK ONE) are from 2010, which is without a doubt the almost important menses of learning and growth as an artist I experienced since I started drawing. If you subscribe to the x,000 Hours theory from Malcom Gladwell's OUTLIERS, 2010 would be near when I hit that marking and I could feel it. I was no longer trying to draw like someone else or in any certain fashion. I was merely drawing. I was no longer scared of pushing, exploring, reaching beyond what is "right" or "comic book." I was but complimentary styling.
These two sketchbooks collect some of those studies and experiments from the midpoint of my journey to discover who I was as a cartoonist. Fifty-fifty now, I look back and tell myself I need to rediscover some of the boldness and fearlessness I found myself applying to every drawing I did during those years.
